In summary

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish قیزاموق (kızamuk). From kızıl (“red”) and a no longer productive suffix -mık producing nouns from colors. Compare porsuk (“badger”) formed from boz (“grizzled, gray, dun”) and the same suffix with different vowel harmony.
