From Ottoman Turkish قوپوز (kopuz, “a lute with a somewhat globular body”), from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (kopuz, “stringed instrument”), from Proto-Turkic *kopuŕ (“a k. of musical (string) instrument”). Akin to Proto-Mongolic *kuxur (“a musical (string) instrument”) (cf. Mongolian хуур (xuur)), Altaicists consider the Mongolic form to be a cognate to Turkic (although the Altaic theory is now largely discredited), however an early borrowing from Turkic has also been proposed.
