Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish ایرمك (ermek, “to attain, reach, mature”), from Proto-Turkic *ẹ̄r- (“to reach”). According to Nişanyan it is akin to Old Turkic [script needed] (er-, “to be”), see more at imek. Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (er-, “to reach”), Khalaj [script needed] (ẹ̄̂r-, “to reach”) and possibly Hungarian ér (“to reach”), thought to be a Turkic borrowing. Also related to Old Uyghur [script needed] (ert-, “to pass”).
