Etymology

A 1930’s coinage. Partially replaced hâl and vaziyet. By surface analysis, durmak (“to stand, remain”) + dur- + -um. Cognate with Old Turkic 𐱃𐰆𐰺𐰢 (turum, “stature, height”).
