From Ottoman Turkish بونجق (boncuk), from Proto-Turkic *bōnčuk (“beads”), *bōyn-čak, which is thought to derive from *bōyn (“neck”). Cognate with Azerbaijani muncuq, Turkmen monjuk, Kazakh моншақ (monşaq), Kipchak مُنْجُق, Kyrgyz мончок (moncok), Southern Altai мончок (mončok), Tatar monjuk, Uyghur مونچاق (monchaq), Uzbek munchoq, etc.
