Etymology
In summary
From Ottoman Turkish آغیت (ağıt). Further origin is disputed. Perhaps a derivative of Proto-Turkic *yï̄g (“interjection of sorrow and sadness”). If so, likely Proto-Turkic *yï̄g (interjection of sorrow and sadness) + *-a + *-ut. Compare ağlamak (“to cry, to weep”), from Proto-Turkic *yï̄gla-, from *yï̄g + *-la. Alternatively, possibly from Armenian; compare Armenian աղատ (aġat, “supplication”), Middle Armenian աղատել (aġatel, “to lament”), Old Armenian աղէտ (ałēt, “pity; grief; calamity”).
