zê
Meaning
The name of the Latin-script letter Z/z.
Synonyms
Frequency
Pronounced as (IPA)
/ˈze/
Etymology
Inherited from Latin zeta, reduced by analogy with the many other letters that end with the /e/ sound (such as bê and vê). Compare English zee (from zed), Galician zeta, and Spanish zeta. Portuguese and (American) English are the only languages in which Z is not called zeta or some variation thereof, with a biphonemic (two-sound) short form being used instead.
