From Old Galician-Portuguese voto, partly borrowed from Latin vōtum (“vow”), itself from voveō (“to vow”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁wegʷʰ-. Doublet of the inherited bodo (“food, money, or clothes given to the poor on holy days”) and boda (“wedding”).
