Borrowed from Italian tartaruga, from Late Latin tartarucha, feminine of tartaruchus, from Ancient Greek ταρταροῦχος (tartaroûkhos, “inhabitant of Tartarus”), from Τάρταρος (Tártaros, “Tartarus”). Sense 3 comes from the shape of a cat's eye that resembles a turtle shell.
