Etymology

From the feminine of raio, or from Vulgar Latin *radia, from Latin radius; cf. also the verb raiar. Compare Galician raia, Spanish raya. Cf. also French raie. A less likely etymology derives it from an earlier arraia, from Old Galician-Portuguese *arraia, from Arabic رَعِيَّة (raʕiyya).
