Etymology

From Old Galician-Portuguese praça, plaça, a semi-learned borrowing from Latin platea, from Ancient Greek πλατεῖα (plateîa), shortening of πλατεῖα (plateîa) ὁδός (hodós, “broad way”). Cognate with Italian piazza, Venetian piasa, Sicilian chiazza, French place and Spanish plaza. Doublet of plateia.
