Etymology
Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese prata, from Vulgar Latin *platta, *plattus, from Ancient Greek πλατύς (platús), because silver was often made into sheets. Possibly a semi-learned term, as it did not undergo the usual sound shifts. Compare Galician prata and Spanish plata. See also the related prato and chato.
