From Old Galician-Portuguese mõesteiro (“monastery”), from Vulgar Latin *monistērium from Late Latin monastērium (“monastery, monk's cell”), from Ancient Greek μοναστήριον (monastḗrion, “hermit's cell”), from μόνος (mónos, “alone”). Cognate with Galician mosteiro, English minster and French moutier (Old French moustier). Doublet of monastério.
