Etymology

From Old Galician-Portuguese outeiro, probably from Latin altārium, or a derivative, with the suffix -eiro, of an unattested Old Galician-Portuguese *outo, from Latin altus (“high”) (see alto). Cognate with Galician outeiro and Spanish otero. Cf. also altar.
