Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese olho (“eye”), from Vulgar Latin oclus (“eye”), from Latin oculus (“eye”), from Proto-Italic *okelos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃okʷ-, *h₃ekʷ- (“eye; to see”). Doublet of óculo, a borrowing. Compare Galician ollo, Spanish ojo, French œil and Italian occhio.
