Etymology
Probably a semi-learned borrowing from Latin spatula (“broad, flat piece”), diminutive of spatha, from Ancient Greek σπάθη (spáthē, “any broad blade, of wood or metal”). Compare the inherited doublet espalda, and later borrowing espátula.
