Probably from Gothic *𐍃𐍀𐌹𐍄𐌿𐍃 (*spitus), from Proto-Germanic *spitō (“rod”); alternatively from a Gothic or Suevic form derived from Proto-Germanic *speutą (“spear”). Cognate with Galician and Spanish espeto. Compare also English spit and Swedish spett.
