Borrowed from French berceau, ultimately from Vulgar Latin berciolum, diminutive of *bertium, from Gaulish *berta, from Proto-Celtic *bertā, variant of *bereti (“to carry”). Compare Old Irish bert (“bundle”). Cognate with Catalan bressol.
