Etymology

Believed to derive from Latin Extrēma Dūriī, alluding to the fact that those regions are located beyond the Douro river. In the case of the Portuguese region, later reinterpreted as being the most "extreme" (that is, westernmost) region of mainland Portugal and Europe.
