Of uncertain origin; possibly from a Berber source like Tarifit aynaw (“mute”) (alternative form agnaw) i.e. “those who don't speak our language” (compare the similarly constructed Slavic term *němьcь (“foreigner”, literally “not-speak”), as in Polish Niemiec (“German”)).
