Etymology

In summary

From Middle Dutch siele, from Old Dutch *siola, contraction of an earlier *sēola (compare Old Saxon sēola), from Proto-West Germanic *saiwalu, from Proto-Germanic *saiwalō. The attested Old Dutch form sēla, with a different form of contraction, would have led to modern Dutch *zeel as in German Seele. Further cognate with Low German Seel, West Frisian siel, English soul.
