Etymology
From vluchteling + -en- + kamp, probably a calque of English refugee camp. First attested around 1900 in relation to the Second Boer War, denoting the British internment/concentration camps. As a result it was initially considered a cynical, sanitised term, but the word became more neutral during the First World War.
