From Middle Dutch winkel (“corner”), from Old Dutch winkel, from Proto-West Germanic *winkil, from Proto-Germanic *winkilaz, from Proto-Indo-European *weng- (“to bend, bow, arch, curve”). Cognate with German Winkel, Old English wincel. The meaning "shop" is derived from the meaning "corner in which merchandise is stalled".
