From Middle Dutch schricken, from Old Dutch *skrikken, from Proto-Germanic *skrikjaną; the ultimate origin is uncertain, possibly related to *skeraną (“to shear”) or *skrīaną (“to scream”). Also compare Old Norse skaga (“to jut out”).
