Etymology

In summary

From Middle Dutch schicht, from Old Dutch *skiht, from Proto-Germanic *skihtiz, derived from *skehaną (from which geschieden). The meaning was "something that shoots forward" and is only attested in Dutch; the German near-cognate Geschichte preserves the earlier meaning "forward movement" and hence "that which proceeds/occurs".
