From earlier nerve, from Middle Dutch *narwe, either inherited from Old Dutch *narwa or borrowed from Middle Low German narwe, eventually from Proto-Germanic *narwō, from earlier *arwaz (“scar”). For the change of -rwe → -rf, compare verf. Cognate with German Narbe (“scar”).
