Etymology
From Middle Dutch jegenode, from jegen (“against”) + -ode, literally "the land which lies opposed to the observer". Originally a loan translation of Old French contrée, from Vulgar Latin (terra) contrāta (“opposite land”). Cognate to German Gegend.
