Etymology

A variant of jolen, from Middle Dutch jolen (“to sing loudly, cheer, rejoice”). Cognate with Middle Low German jolen (“to hoot, holler, rejoice”) (whence German Low German jöhlen (“to hoot, holler”)), German johlen (“to hoot, howl, jeer”), West Frisian joelje (“to shout”), Saterland Frisian jöälje (“to hoot, holler”). Compare also Dutch juilen (“to howl, yelp”), Middle English youlen (“to cry aloud, howl”).
