From Middle Dutch gasthūs. a. 1700s house for the reception of strangers/foreigners/indigents/invalids, tavern, jail, c. 1800s hospital, almshouse, charitable institution. This term as well as its Germanic cognates: Old High German gasthūs whence Middle High German gasthūs, Modern German Gasthaus, and Old English gæsthūs are likely calqued from Medieval Latin hospitale (“hospice, shelter, guesthouse, jail”), Cf. hôpital, hôtel.
