From Middle Dutch blader (“vesicle”), from Old Dutch *blādara, from Proto-West Germanic *blādrā (“blister, bubble”). Created by syncope of the -d- from Middle Dutch blader; the -d- is geminated before the -r-, similar to botter from boter and wakker from waken.
