Etymology
In summary
From earlier bevrijen, from Middle Dutch bevriën, a prefixed form of vriën (“to free”). Can be interpreted synchronically as be- + vrijen or vrij + be- -en. The -d- is a hypercorrection, probably influenced by the past tense bevrijd and/or compensating for a mistakenly supposed case of d-weakening (compare vlieden); contrast vrijen, which has the etymologically expected form without -d-.
