Alkmaar

Alkmaar (a city and municipality of North Holland, Netherlands)

Pronounced as (IPA)
/ˈɑlk.maːr/
Etymology

In summary

From Middle Dutch Alcmāer, from Old Dutch Alkmare, Alcmare, Alcmere, Allecmere. Compound of an unclear first element and either Old Dutch mere (“lake”) or mare (“watercourse”). The first element has been variously linked to Old Dutch alk (“crow”) and *alke (“mud”). A derivation from Proto-Germanic *alha (“temple”) or *alha (“moose”) is unlikely. Compare Alkemade.
