From Proto-Indo-European *h₂weh₁-lo- (“wind”), from *h₂weh₁- (“to blow”), named after the speed of wind. Older theories derive the word from Proto-Italic *weksloks, from Proto-Indo-European *weǵʰ- (“to bring, transport”) (whence vehō).
