Etymology
Traditionally derived from vārus (“bent in; knock-kneed; different”) + -ius (“-y: forming adjectives”). De Vaan finds this connection somewhat unconvincing semantically, and hesitantly prefers a derivation from a Proto-Italic *wasios (which would have no certain cognates outside of Italic), linking the word to vafer (“clever”).
