From Proto-Italic *tītjō (“heating”), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *teyh₁- (“to become hot, melt or to end”). Cognate to Old Irish tinaid (“to melt, disappear”), Middle Welsh odit (“rarity”), Icelandic þíður (“melted, thawed”), Hittite zanuzi (“to cook (trans.)”), zinnizi (“to end, finish”).
