From Proto-Italic *tālis, from Proto-Indo-European *to- (“demonstrative stem”) and maybe *h₂el- (“to grow”) (cf. the sense of indolēs, from this root). Cognate with Ancient Greek τηλίκος (tēlíkos, “of such an age”), Welsh talu (“to pay”), Proto-Slavic *toliko (“this much”).
