From Proto-Italic *pluto-, of unknown ultimate origin. Possibly from a late Proto-Indo-European *ploh₃w-tó-m, *plow-tó-m?, shared with Old Norse fleyðr (“cross-beam”), Proto-Balto-Slavic *plouto (Lithuanian plaũtas, Latvian plàukts, Proto-Slavic *pluto (“flotsam”)).
