Etymology

Somewhat problematically, from an apparent root [Term?], probably from Proto-Indo-European *pl̥H-wós, from *pelH- (“gray”), whence also Latin pallidus, pullus, but the formal relationships between these words are unclear. Cognates include Sanskrit पलित (palitá), Ancient Greek πελιτνός (pelitnós), Old Church Slavonic плавъ (plavŭ), Old Armenian ալիք (alikʻ, “wave, gray hair”), German falb (“pallid”). Borrowing from a foreign or substrate Indo-European language is possible.
