Translations
Pronounced as (IPA)
[ˈstrɪ.ɡa]
Etymology
Borrowed from Ancient Greek στρίγα (stríga), the accusative of στρίξ (stríx, “owl”), which also gave strī̆x (“screech owl; witch”), probably of onomatopoeic origin and related to Latin strīdō (“to make a shrill sound”). Compare typologically Russian карга́ (kargá), also considered borrowed, akin to Turkish karga.
