Etymology

From Proto-Italic *stāmen, from Proto-Indo-European *stéh₂mn̥, from *steh₂- (“stand”), whence also stō and sistō. Cognate with Sanskrit स्थामन् (sthā́man, “place; strength”), Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐍉𐌼𐌰 (stōma), Ancient Greek στῆμα (stêma), used by Hesychius for a part of a plant. Equivalent to stō (“to stand”) + -men (noun-forming suffix).
