(conjugation-1, figuratively) to strive, make effort
Pronounced as (IPA)
[ˈnɪk.toː]
Etymology
From Proto-Italic *kniktos + -ō. The term *kniktos was, according to De Vaan, the perfect passive participle to Proto-Italic *kneiɣʷēō, itself from the Proto-Indo-European *kneygʷʰ- (“to bend, to droop”). Cognate with connīveō, nītor (“to bear or rest upon something”), Proto-Germanic *hnīwaną.
