From Proto-Italic *loidō, from an o-grade form of Proto-Indo-European *leyd- (“to play”), perhaps reduplicated present *lé-loyd-ti ~ *lé-lid-n̥ti through dissimilation. Cognate with Ancient Greek λίζω (lízō, “to play”).
