Etymology

Cognate with Ancient Greek ἵππος (híppos), Sanskrit अश्व (áśva), Persian اسب (asb), Old Armenian էշ (ēš, “donkey”), Tocharian B yakwe, and Gaulish epos. Respelt with ⟨quu⟩ for the earlier ⟨quo⟩/⟨cu⟩ in post-Augustan times on the analogy of oblique cases.
