From Proto-Italic *araō, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éryeti (“to plough”), from the root *h₂erh₃-. The root-final laryngeal was lost in the Proto-Indo-European verb, but was restored in Proto-Italic. Cognates include Ancient Greek ἀρόω (aróō), Old Church Slavonic орати (orati), Lithuanian arti, and Old English erian (archaic English ear).
