De Vaan favors an explanation from Proto-Indo-European *ḱōn-eh₂-ie- (verb), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱōn-o- (adjective), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱon-o-, from *ken-. De Vaan suggests that it is also possible that it may derive from a root noun *ḱṓn- (“ascent”). This noun may have underwent a semantic shift from "ascent" to "effort" or "attempt."
