From Early Medieval Latin troppus, borrowed from Frankish *þorp (“a cluster, agglomeration", also "collection of houses, village”), from Proto-Germanic *þurpą (“village”), from Proto-Indo-European *trab-, *treb- (“dwelling, room”).
