From Late Latin sēra, from ellipsis of Latin sēra diēs, from sērus (“late”). Cognate with Venetan séra, Friulian sere, Sicilian sira, Romanian seară, Romansch saira and French soir m. See also Latin sērōtinus (“late; (relational) evening”). Compare typologically Spanish tarde, Mongolian орой (oroj), Chinese 晚 (wǎn) (the terms meaning both “evening” and “late”).
