Etymology

From Late Latin scrōfulae, derived from scrōfa (“sow, female pig”) as a semantic calque of Ancient Greek χοιράδες (khoirádes), derived from χοῖρος (khoîros, “young pig”), because the scars associated with the pathology were deemed reminiscent of a pathology found in pigs.
