From Late Latin epiglottidem, from Ancient Greek ἐπιγλωττίς (epiglōttís) derived from γλῶττα (glôtta), variant of γλῶσσα (glôssa, “tongue”). By surface analysis, epi- (“above”, “over”) + glottide (“glottis”).
