Inherited from Latin bubulcus (“herdsman”). For the /-f-/, compare gufo < būbō (“owl”), bufalo < būbalus (“buffalo”), and also tartufo < terrae tūber. Osco-Umbrian origin has been proposed, which might also explain the /-i-/: compare Volscian bim (“ox”).
